From the 14th to the 21th August something special will be happening in the streets of Gràcia, Barcelona. The festa major de Gràcia 2014 will turn the neighbourhood into a massive block party where everyone is invited.
A “festa major” could be translated into “main party” and is a celebration in honour of a city or a neighbourhood’s patron saint. Although they can happen all year round, summer is the time when most festes majors are celebrated. During these days, the entire neighbourhood fills the street with folkloric parades and music as well as plenty of activities for everyone.
It is tradition in this festa major for neighbours to unite and decorate their streets. This year, 18 streets in Gràcia are going to be thoroughly decorated under a theme and compete with each other to win the trophy to the best street decoration.
There is also a balcony contest. This year, thirty balconies will take part with themes such as the Sea, flowers, Egyptian theme, cats or the 60’s.
Going to Gràcia just to enjoy its colourful streets will be well worth your while, but there are also plenty of activities for all ages on the street. Lots of food and drink to taste: From vermouth and tapas tasting to wine, omelette and even paella. You’ll also find plays for children, cinema nights, dance classes, street games, fireworks and lots of concerts and DJ’s playing every day of the week for all musical tastes: from jazz, blues and folk music to rumba, pop, electro and reggae.
Apart from listening to music basically during all day , Heliogàbal club offers its annual mini festival where local artists play for three nights. This year, El Petit de Cal Eril, Pony Bravo or la Banda del Polo Norte are playing. You’ll find it on the Rovira I Trias Square from the 17th to the 19th August at eleven o’clock at night.
