The Columbus Monument was built in 1888 in honor of the explorer Christopher Columbus. The Columbus Monument is 60 meters tall and is located near the port of Barcelona. It is the meeting point of the Ramblas and Paseo de Colón.
The monument is composed of a huge Corinthian column on which the Columbus Statue stands. At the bottom of the column there are several sculptural groups related to the discovery of America as well as eight lions.
In 1881 it was decided to pay tribute to Christopher Columbus by choosing the port of Barcelona, where he disembarked after his trip to America. After seven years of construction, the monument was inaugurated in 1888 for the celebration of the ceremonies of the World Expo held in the city. The statue is the work of Rafael Atché and he depicted Columbus pointing towards the New World with his right hand.
