The Ciutadella Park is a famous park in Barcelona and one of the green areas in the city. It is one of the favorite places of both tourists and locals for all kinds of activities. At the weekends it is full of people and all kinds of events including street fairs, outdoor concerts, picnics, doing exercises, etc. But one of the virtues of Ciutadella Park is its lake, where you can rent a little boat and go sailing.
Although the park grounds were the ancient fortress of the Ciutadella, the Ciutalldea Park was not built until the late nineteenth century. With the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1888, Barcelona began to reform the city with the intention to become a European symbol.
The mayor of Barcelona was commissioned to the construction of the park. The design was inspired by European gardens, i.e., large gardens with the introduction of fountains and monuments.
This included the collaboration of Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domenech – Montaner (known for the Hospital de Sant Pau and the Palau de la Música Catalana) among other great architects and sculptors.
